Local Small Business redefining Furniture and Art

My Méz, a Rhode Island-based, family-owned business, is redefining how we look at furniture and art by producing handmade, thoughtfully-designed birch tables that can also hang as art. Even more ingenious is that My Méz offers customers a piece of art and a working piece of furniture for one price! An elegant solution for cozy spaces and a smart move (in a still recovering economy).

These artful, custom Méz pieces add character to any residential or commercial space and have already been heralded as thoughtful gifts. They offer two unique features:

1. You can hang a Méz as artwork and when needed use it as a table. The table legs nestle behind the frame and can be fastened without the use of any tools.

2. The table top is covered with a photo and finished with a durable and attractive gloss that renders the tabletop water and alcohol proof. Customers can select an image from the My Méz photo gallery, send in their own, or pick from the photographers that collaborate with My Méz.

Imagine a montage of treasured family photos or a single shot from your favorite vacation spot, sporting event or special occasion. My Méz works individually with customers who select their own photo(s), size, frame and stain, and fashions their memories into a lasting form and function. These elegant tables are also very easy to maintain as they are water and alcohol proof.

My Méz is founded and owned by Samir Dhamija and Akanksha Aga. With the launch of this venture, this husband and wife team, like many immigrants is pursuing the American Dream. They met, in 2002, while pursuing their MBAs at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. “We picked this name, based on our Indian heritage,” says Dhamija. Méz is a Hindi word for table, similar to Mesa in Latin and Portuguese. “We’ve consciously retained complete production in the USA, specifically Rhode Island. We’ve lived here for 12 years now and THIS is home!”

As the visionary of My Méz, Dhamija oversees production and business operations, while his wife, Akanksha, focuses on business development and marketing. My Méz launched in July 2012, but Dhamija has been honing the prototype since 2010 – “the summer we found out we were expecting our daughter,” he says proudly.

Juggling full-time careers and launching a small business while raising a family is not without its challenges, but the couple wouldn’t want it any other way. “Throughout American history you find entrepreneurs behind each economic recovery,” says Aga. “We are working hard and seeing results! We are consciously partnering with quality brands that feel
strongly about American-made products, such as ours. The orders are coming in, our Facebook ‘likes’ go up every week, we are networking, leveraging all the resources we can think of. So, send us a photo and let us aMéze you!”

As My Méz gets ready to mark their First Anniversary this July, they already have noteworthy collaborations under their belt. WaterFire Providence has an exclusive My Méz collection showcased prominently on their online store. McKay’s Furniture has brand new My Méz trays in stock. You could also find My Méz at several best-in-class stores including JW Graham’s Yes! Gallery (historic Wickford Village) and Smyle (Main Street, East Greenwich).
