Snapple Sunset Music Series

get to the show ontime

The Newport Yachting Center will soon be welcoming an eclectic mix of talented musicians to headline this summer’s 11th Annual Snapple Sunset Music Series. The award-winning line-up includes:

Melissa Etheridge (July 6th), Plain White T’s (July 7th), Jimmie Vaughan (July 11th), Indigo Girls (July 12th) and John Hiatt & the Ageless Beauties (August 21st). Melissa Etheridge’s popularity started to build with such memorable originals as “Ain’t It Heavy” for which she won a Grammy, and massive Top Ten hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” which earned her a second Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” In February 2007, she celebrated a career milestone by winning an Academy Award for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Opening for Etheridge on July 6th will be Becky Chace and Mark Cutler.

For almost a decade, the high energy Plain White T’s and its lead vocalist, Tom Higgenson, have played to packed audiences craving that perfect pop-punk punch. But it was their heartfelt, acoustic-tinged tune, “Hey There Delilah” that rose to #1 in the United States and cemented their status as hit-makers. Opening for the Plain White T’s on July 7th will be the bands Mae and the Kung Fu Girls.

Blues guitarist, Jimmie Vaughan, founded The Fabulous Thunderbirds with Kim Wilson in the mid 1970s. He recorded eight

albums with the band, including Tuff Enuff and Wrap It Up, and received two Grammy nominations. In 1993, his album entitled Out There solidified Vaughan’s status as a solo artist thanks to a Grammynomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the song “Ironic Twist”. Vaughan’s special guest on July 11th will be Lou Ann Barton and the opener is the Ken Lyons Quartet.

Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, released their self-titled album in 1988 and its hit single, “Closer To Fine” proceeded to go Platinum and win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. The band was also nominated for Best New Artist that year. The Indigo Girls took off from there by releasing several albums in the 90’s that went Gold or Platinum, including Rites of Passage featuring “Galileo,” the duo’s first Top 10 Modern Rock track. Opening for the band on July 12th is Rose Polenzani.

Known as one of America’s finest singer-songwriter musicians, John Hiatt’s songs have been covered by hundreds of artists, including Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan. Most notably, Rosanne Cash took his tune, “The Way We Make a Broken Heart” all the way to #1 on the United States country charts in 1987, and Bonnie Raitt brought “Thing Called Love” to #11 on the charts in 1989. Hiatt’s twenty album releases include the Grammy nominated Walk On, in 1995, and Crossing Muddy Waters, in 2000. Opening for Hiatt on August 21st is Kevin Montgomery.
